As the weather warms up, a few things come to mind: cute shorts, swimsuits, saddles and the uncomfortable rubbing of the thighs that often accompanies all of the above. For some of us (hello, hello!), Heat and humidity can be hard on sensitive skin. Add a little sweat and a little friction, and it’s a one-way ticket to the bag town.
Of course, rubbing is not just about the thighs. According to board-certified dermatologist Naana Boakye, MD, MPH, who is the founder of Bergen Dermatology in New Jersey, rubbing can occur between the cheeks, nipples and armpits.
“Friction occurs when the skin rubs against each other for an extended period of time,” he explains. While rubbing alone is enough to increase heat in an unpleasant way, Dr. Boakye says rubbing it also disrupts the skin’s barrier, which can promote increased moisture and possibly wetting.
While you may think that extremely moist skin is good, it can actually lead to long-term damage and discomfort. According to Wounds Canada, a charity organization focused on wound prevention, when the skin becomes too hydrated, it can deteriorate, thus separating the layers of the skin and possibly develop into a sore wound. Most commonly, wetting is associated with incontinence-related dermatitis and trench leg, but in extreme cases, Dr. Boakye admits that long-term rubbing, if left untreated, can also.

How to prevent abrasion, according to a dermatologist
Thoroughly clean the area and make sure it is completely dry
Warmer weather means more sweat and more opportunities for a dip in any given body of water. In either case, letting the moisture stay on your skin can enhance the effects of abrasion and make it more uncomfortable. (As opposite as it sounds). Therefore, Dr. Boakye says keep areas that are prone to damage dry and clean. This way, if rehydrated, at least the bacteria will be kept away.
Use a powder that can help keep the affected area dry
Since it is unrealistic to constantly wipe your skin while you are busy enjoying the hottest weather, Dr. Boakye recommends powder applications, as they will help absorb moisture and prevent rubbing. However, if you hate the idea of sprinkling old school dust between your thighs, there is always the option of grabbing a powder-based gel.
Monistat Chafing Relief Powder Gel ($ 6) is my absolute favorite. I carry it in a tube wherever I go during the summer, even if the brand seems to be doing something else … (Although yeast infections are nothing to be ashamed of! It’s time to normalize these things. )
Wear appropriate clothing
If you find that your thighs, vagina or armpits are creaking while they are covered in clothes, Dr. Boakye says it may be time to rethink your outfit. For thighs, it is advisable to make sure that your pants or shorts are pulled to completely cover the skin of your thighs. (Hi, bike shorts.) Or, if you’re wearing a dress, slip on the Jockey Life Slipshorts ($ 10), which Well + Good authors called a “secret weapon” against friction. And do not worry, they will make sure you breathe * down there. *
Speaking of breathing, if your booty is to blame, try wearing moisture-repellent underwear, preferably cotton. It can even be thong, as long as you stay dry even on the most swampy afternoons.
Consult your dermatologist
If no product or clothing can keep the hassle of rubbing away, Dr. Boakye admits he may need a topical steroid to help with inflammation. Therefore, it is never a bad idea to tell your dermatologist what is going on to get a personalized professional opinion on how to proceed best.
The squeaking is perfectly normal. Whether your thighs are rubbing against each other or your clothes are rubbing against bare skin, it is incredibly common for skin irritation to occur – as long as you treat it the right way.
